𝗔𝗹𝗯𝘂𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 – 𝗞𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗠

The Sheepdogs are a band from Saskatoon, a city in the heart of Canada. Formed in the early 2000s, the band established themselves as a solid rock force, with albums entering the Canadian charts. Their 2018 record, “Changing Colours” even climbed to number two in the charts.

The Sheepdogs are not that well known in Europe, but this may change with their latest studio album, “Keep Out of the Storm”. This new release features eleven songs, with the opener, “Nobody But You”, also serving as the lead single. Although The Sheepdogs aren’t a roaring, loud band, the album includes pulsating rock songs such as “All I Wanna Do” and the upbeat “I Do”.

Overall, though, The Sheepdogs focus on groove and melody. “Keep Out of the Storm” features gentle rock songs that resonate with emotion. “Take a Look at Me Riding” showcases the emotional intensity of the band. It is one of the most soulful moments on the album and demonstrates the band’s exceptional songwriting skills. The arrangement, which includes a trumpet, adds an extra spark to this great tune.

“Bad For Your Health” is certainly good for your ears. This mesmerising track reveals the band’s rock roots, before “Breezy” offers a soulful contrast. It is the perfect soundtrack for a lazy summer evening on the terrace, dreaming away with a good drink in hand and the sunset in front of you.

“The Yellow Line” brings back the trumpet, and it is this vintage vibe that makes “Keep Out the Storm” a special album. The stress and hectic rush of daily life seem far away while listening to these eleven tunes. This album is a retreat for the soul, exuding the beauty and wildness of Canadian nature. “Keep Out of the Storm” is a great rock album.

The Sheepdogs have created a groove-laden new record that expresses pure emotion. It is attention-grabbing music that allows you to explore all the little details and twists. “Keep Out of the Storm” is a refreshing alternative to trend-driven chart music, showcasing pure craftsmanship from start to finish. These songs are built on authenticity and a passion for emotional music that captivates listeners from the very first note.

𝗔𝗹𝗯𝘂𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗚𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗚𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗔 – 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗦 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗔𝗞

As someone who writes music reviews, I take pride in being able to craft together a 450-550 word essay on why you should pick up an album, or why you should avoid it entirely. Keeping the reader on their tippy-toes while painting a vivid picture for your eyes and ears to digest is a great joy of mine. However, as the world aged by a year this week, I too have added another year to my existence. In doing so, I’ve realized that there comes a time where you have to dispense with the hyperbolic bullshit and just call it as it is. And it’s with this mindset that I will discuss The Deathmass Cloak, the debut album by Cali-doom/death youngsters, Ghoulgotha.

But first, I will discuss what’s good about the album. Guitarist/vocalist W. Sarantopoulos has a very deep rasp that is quite Will Rahmer-esque, for those of you who miss Mortician. Each song has at least one moment that will invoke serious headbanging (like the part from 3:12-3:44 in “Gazing into Melted Night,” or 0:43-1:40 of “Arteries Unblest”). Also, drummer C. Koryn is already displaying some incredible technical ablities early in his young career.

So what’s wrong? Practically everything else. Picture, if you will, a supergroup made up of Alf Svensson (ex-At The Gates) and Calvin Robertshaw (My Dying Bride) on guitars. You would think that would be a pretty damn cool amalgamation of The Red in the Sky is Ours/Turn Loose the Swans-style epicness, correct? Well, what if I were to tell you that they would tune their guitars roughly a quarter step off from each other, and you found out that Svensson’s leads were just him fumbling scales with gloves on? Oh, and they didn’t bother to tell the rest of the band at times what they were playing? Folks, meet The Deathmass Cloak!

Seriously, every song has a guitar “melody” that sounds like me practicing for the first year of playing, and it’s dreadful, not tuned properly, and shoved way high in the mix for no reason at all. Seriously, “Gazing into Melted Night” starts off with this, and the first time I played it, all three of my cats hissed at me. “Arteries Unblest” has an acoustic guitar/lead guitar dual-melody section where they are so off tune from one another it’s flat-out embarrassing. “Austere Urns” has that annoying guitar melody that just comes out of nowhere and is sloppily performed. In fact, for all the headbanging moments on the record, they are ruined by poor songwriting decisions and those god-awful melodies peppering the album.

Soundwise, the production by Damian Herring (he of Horrendous fame) is thick, chewy, and perfect for doom/death, and yes, it’s dynamic. But as someone who’s released one of the most acclaimed albums of last year, it’s baffling why, as a producer, he didn’t step in to say, “Hey, guys? You can play that memorable part a bit longer and not switch off ALL THE FUCKING TIME.” Or, better yet, “Here, you guys wanna borrow my guitar tuner?” Because, quite frankly, in order to be technical and creative, you have to be good at your instrument. But the biggest cause for my utter hate of this record has to be the 11-minute (OMFG) closer, “Levitate Within The Curse,” which is about six minutes of horrible twin guitar melodies and mediocre blasting, followed by a minute of ambient bullshit, and returning with demo-quality sound with seemingly only half the band playing! Did Dark Descent cut the band off financially or something? Dead fucking serious, what the shit, guys?!

I’m sure people will belly-ache about how “vnkvlt” or “gay” this review is, or how I should follow the unwritten rule of worshipping bands who can’t play their instruments, as everyone and their mother will try to wax poetic, aiming to out-Pitchfork one another in vain attempts at wordsmithing and brown-nosery, and to all this I cry “bullshit.” This album physically hurt, and not in a good “metal” way. If wincing in abject agony due to poor tuning or awful songwriting decisions tickles your fancy, by all means, have at it. I’ll be listening to something way more enjoyable.

𝗔𝗹𝗯𝘂𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗥𝗔 𝗔𝗧𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔 – 𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗔𝗡𝗦

There’s a new voyage that you can embark upon right now! This comes in the form of TERRA ATLANTICA’s latest tale Oceans, and it is one that every adventurer should experience in its entirety. So, are you ready to read my thoughts in one of my rare track-by-track reviews? Let’s dive in.

It opens with the epic-sounding instrumental Ocean Fever. It’s one that leaves the listener feeling anticipated, especially if you’re like me and this is your first proper experience of the band. The more I listened to this track, the more empowered I felt, especially now I know what’s to come. It’s an exciting voyage.

Back To The Sea is the first full-length track of the record. This song provides some comfort in reinforcing the message of not being afraid of the unknown; it can be exciting not knowing what lies ahead as you can write your own tale and go wherever the winds take you. If you wonder what a collaboration between MAJESTICA and DRAGONY sounds like, this will give you an idea.

It’s no surprise that Hoist The Sail is one of the singles. If you have listened to it multiple times, you are most likely singing the words to the chorus already. This track is great fun and is full of jaunty sea shenanigans. This is the song every pirate metal band wishes they had written.

Ever wondered what the love child of THE ANIMALS’ House of the Rising Sun, TWILIGHT FORCE tune Sunlight Knight, and NANOWAR OF STEEL’s Norwegian Reggaeton would sound like? Listen to Caribbean Shores, and that will give you a rough idea. There’s just the right amount going on in the song, and you still have a great time. This song showcases their great songwriting skills.

Turn Of The Tide is a great heroic melody that encourages you to take charge of your own destiny and sail those waves to where you’re meant to be. This is what it would sound like if WARKINGS and AVANTASIA had collaborated on a track together.

Through the Water and the Waves has all the best parts of power metal rolled into one. It caught me off guard at first with its SLAYER-esque riff at the start. When listening to this again, it made me wonder if Hansi Kürsch lent his powerful vocals to this swashbuckling track. This is sure to encourage headbanging wherever you happen to be.

If you need that beacon of hope, Where My Brothers Await is the perfect track for that. In fact, it’s the best track from an album I have heard in a long time. The empowering melody and the profound vocals work together beautifully to create this remarkable song. It’s an important reminder of those in our support networks when we reach troubled and stressful times.

If GRAILKNIGHTS took to the high seas, Land of Submarines would be the one. It’s a perfect, straightforward track that gets the blood pumping. I wouldn’t be surprised if mosh pits broke out in this one.

Raven In The Dark is a beautifully dark track that contains very poignant messages within the lyrics. This is the part of the story where someone is about to lose hope and give up on everything until that voice of hope comes through.

The last tracks The Realms Of God and Oceans Of Eternity are both triumphant in their own special ways. The Realms Of God brings the image of a final battle to mind where the listener is victorious in one war or another. Both prog and power metal fans will rejoice when Oceans Of Eternity begins to play; the tie into Ocean Fever from the start is an incredible touch and will encourage the adventurer to embark upon the voyage again.

It was around this time last year that I started my recovery from a severe burnout, and certain albums helped me along my journey. I can confidently say that Oceans is the latest album to add to that list. It’s an album that teaches me not to be afraid of the unknown and to embrace it. If this sounds like the adventure you want to embark upon, join TERRA ATLANTICA, and as they say, “hoist the sail.”

𝗔𝗹𝗯𝘂𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗘𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘 – 𝗦𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘

With their blend of mystery and elegance, Austrian Symphonic Metallers EDENBRIDGE have slowly been carving their place in this genre. They are due to release their latest album Set The Dark On Fire in a matter of days. They have gone in a heavier direction with their sound while remaining true to their style that has secured them many listeners over the years. Let me explain a little more about what that looks like.

The album opens dramatically with The Ghostship Diaries; it lures the listener into a world that EDENBRIDGE has created for us, and we all want to join this. Within this track, you can hear the heavier sound for the first time, and you can tell that they have stuck to their core sound. One of their previous tracks, The Canterville Ghost, comes to mind, mainly due to the incredible multi-layering in the chorus.

EDENBRIDGE was one of the first bands that introduced me to symphonic metal when I was sixteen years old. So listening to and delving into this record was like reconnecting with a vital part of my music journey, reminding me why I got into writing about music and letting people know which bands they ought to check out. Below are just a few examples of the beauties this album has to offer.

Our Place Among The Stars is one of the most mindful tracks I have had the pleasure of coming across. It slows things down with its immersive guitar riffs and sweeping rhythms that you can get lost in. This also provides a nostalgic trip to those hazy summer days. The best way to listen to this track is to relax, take a deep breath, and soak up everything this track has to offer. It deserves your undivided attention.

Bonded By The Light is the ballad of the album, and it is stunning. This one particularly showcases Sabine Edelsbacher’s vocal range beautifully; imagine the power of Bette Midler and the mystery of Kate Bush combined together; this will give you a rough idea of what that sounds like.

At first, Lighthouse reminded me strongly of MYRATH. This was due to the mystery, elegance and heaviness it offered up. It’s also full of delight, wonder and majesty, the type to take you to a far off land and allow you to escape for those few moments. The shimmering guitar solo and powerful vocal ensemble were the cherries on top of this majestic track.

Symphonic and Power Metal fans will rejoice at the four part closer Spark Of The Everflame. Each part is different to each other yet they all form together incredibly well. Let Time Begin brings the dramatic flair that reminds me of QUEEN’s Death On Two Legs. The opening riff in The Winding Road To Evermore brings SLIPKNOT classic Before I Forget strongly to mind, adding the symphonic elements amplifies that energy even further. Per Aspera Ad Astra gives us hope with a sinister twist, keeping us on our toes. Where It Ends, Where It Starts is a grand conclusion that brings it all together.

Set The Dark On Fire is a remarkable album that will take you on an incredible journey. It also shows that EDENBRIDGE are a band to be checking out and keeping your ears out for. It provides that morale boost for longtime fans and new listeners alike.

Deathcore patriarchs Whitechapel are currently gearing up a supporting run this spring flanking Slaughter to Prevail for a lengthy stretch to begin their 2026 touring slate. In addition, the band will take on their own headlining dates as well as confirmed domestic festival appearances at Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple.

Adding to their live calendar, Whitechapel have also announced plans to take on Europe for a 2027 headlining tour dubbed, ‘Burn Forever.’ Heading out in support of their 2025 return to form, Hymns In Dissonance, Whitechapel will embark on an extended run of Europe opposite UK metal juggernaut, Sylosis as well as labelmates 200 Stab Wounds and Tribal Gaze.

Whitechapel guitarist Alex Wade said, "We are excited to announce the Burn Forever European Tour 2027. This will mark a long overdue full European headlining run featuring some of the sickest names in modern metal. On the mainland Europe dates, we will be headlining while all of the UK dates we will be coheadlining with Sylosis with them closing. We look forward to seeing everyone out there, new fans and old, don’t miss it!"

Reiterating the obliterating quality of their latest full length, Whitechapel have teamed with dorector David Brodsky of My Good Eye for a harrowing new visual for the track. "Nothing Is Coming For Any of Us." Along with the sonic decimation of the single, the accompanying visual creates a terrifying universe that aligns with Whitechapel’s brand of sonic devastation.

𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: 𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗢𝗠 – 𝗟𝗔𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟

VENOM will release a new studio album, "Into Oblivion", on May 1 via Noise/BMG. The official music video for the LP’s first single, "Lay Down Your Soul", can be seen below.

"Into Oblivion" is VENOM’s sixteenth studio album and features the long-standing lineup of Conrad "Cronos" Lant on bass/vocals, Rage (a.k.a. Stuart Dixon) on guitar and Danté (a.k.a. Danny Needham) on drums, and marks VENOM’s first new recordings since 2018’s "Storm The Gates" LP.

"Into Oblivion" consists of thirteen songs that are signature VENOM: heavy, evil and catchy. There’s a combination of the band’s classic 1980s sound adjacent to a more modern, progressive approach but without losing any of their fire and brimstone of old.

The album has been in the works for some years now, but a number of factors held back its completion until now; the COVID pandemic, recording setbacks and the hunger to nail it to perfection, but in the words of Cronos: "This album has really pushed the boundaries, but if you want to make a killer album, you pay for it in blood, sweat and tears."

VENOM, true to form, has overcome adversity to release an album worthy of the band’s legacy, as Rage affirms: "I’m so proud of this album. It’s astounding! It feels so different, yet so familiar. The sonics are a step up, no song sounds the same, but they all work together."

The lead single, the aforementioned "Lay Down Your Soul", is a thunderous first offering and harks back to the band’s formative years and the song "Black Metal". While being slightly tongue in cheek, it bears all the hallmarks of a soon-to-be live classic with its rousing sing-along chorus.

Cronos states: "I think it’s healthy to recognize things from back in the day and bring them into a new setting that gives it a whole fresh approach. The fans are going to go mental for it!"

The chemistry on "Into Oblivion" is undeniable and is a musical testament to the longevity of this lineup, which now eclipses any other, clocking in at seventeen years. Danté clicks his fingers: "It’s gone like that, seventeen years! It’s all down to friendship and mutual respect."

Preorders of both vinyl and CD will come with a limited photo card, signed by Cronos, Danté and Rage, only from the Noise Records store, while stocks last.

"Into Oblivion" track listing:
01. Into Oblivion
02. Lay Down Your Soul
03. Nevermore
04. Man & Beast
05. Death The Leveller
06. As Above So Below
07. Kicked Outta Hell
08. Legend
09. Live Loud
10. Metal Bloody Metal
11. Dogs Of War
12. Deathwitch
13. Unholy Mother

There are now three different bands using variations of the VENOM name for their live shows. In addition to the new collaboration between Jeff "Mantas" Dunn and Anthony "Abaddon" Bray, VENOM’s iconic co-founders — who recently announced that they will celebrate the 45th anniversary of VENOM’s classic debut album, 1981’s "Welcome To Hell", at various festivals in 2026, including Germany’s Keep It True — there is the Cronos-fronted version of VENOM, in which he is the sole remaining member from the band’s classic era, and there is VENOM INC., which is led by Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan, who was a member of VENOM between 1989 and 1992, appearing on the albums "Prime Evil" (1989),"Temples Of Ice" (1991) and "The Waste Lands" (1992).

In June 2024, Cronos filed a lawsuit against Abaddon and Plastic Head Music Distribution Ltd in which he accused the distributor of selling merchandise with Lant’s copyrighted VENOM designs and Bray of approving the infringement through a licensing agreement. The dispute revolved around the fact that both parties were licensing and selling official VENOM merchandise featuring the contested designs.

According to Law360.com, Lant testified in court last year that he joined VENOM in late 1979 and came up with the Satanic-themed designs used in the band’s logo and album covers, which included goat heads, pentagrams and inverted crosses. Bray filed a counterclaim for infringement against Lant and Lant’s distributor, Razmataz.com Ltd., arguing that Bray was the real author of the works. Because Lant was able to produce numerous sketches which demonstrated his design process and Bray was unable to do the same, Bray was deemed the owner of the original logo, while Lant was found to be the creator and copyright owner of all but one of the other artistic works in dispute.

VENOM’s classic lineup trio of Dunn, Lant and Bray recorded four studio LPs, "Welcome To Hell" (1981),"Black Metal" (1982),"At War With Satan" (1984) and "Possessed" (1985),and live album, "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" (1986). Often cited by bands such as METALLICA, BEHEMOTH, CELTIC FROST and MAYHEM as major influences, they are one of the most revered bands of their generation.

𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: 𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗢 – 𝗠𝗬 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗘

Finnish power metal force Metal De Facto release their brand new album “Land Of The Rising Sun – Part II” today worldwide via Reaper Entertainment.

The highly anticipated successor to Land Of The Rising Sun marks the epic conclusion of the band’s Japanese-inspired power metal saga. Blending razor-sharp riffs, soaring melodies, and cinematic storytelling, Land Of The Rising Sun – Part II showcases Metal De Facto at their most dynamic, powerful, and inspired.

To celebrate the release, the band also unveils a brand new video for the track “My Plastic Escape.”

“My Plastic Escape” highlights another compelling facet of the album, combining driving heaviness with an instantly memorable chorus and emotional depth – a track that perfectly captures the band’s ability to fuse intensity with melody.

The Band comments:
” As an artist, one always goes through a journey when writing a new album. Each note of every song, every word of the lyrics, countless hours of composing and arranging. Moments of pure joy when finding a musical or lyrical way to bring your ideas to life, but also deep frustration when you can’t find a solution to make a song work.

And eventually, you reach the scariest part: when the album is recorded and mixed, and it’s time to let it open its wings and fly away-to share it with the world. It’s also one of the best feelings in the world because then that album-that milestone as a band-is reached.

”Land Of The Rising Sun Part 2” will mark the end of our Japan albums (for now) and also the start of a new era for Metal De Facto in many ways. So it feels good to start a new chapter with the strongest and most ambitious album we have done (so far)!

We hope the old fans like it as much as we do, and naturally we hope our music will reach a lot of new listeners-because with this album, our goal is to get on the road and spread the gospel of power metal around the world!

But now, put on your headphones and enjoy the ride through Japan’s history, myths, beauty, and fury!”

The album is available worldwide via Reaper Entertainment on colored vinyl, black vinyl, and CD digipak.

Check it out here:

The stunning album cover was created by renowned artist Gyula Havancsák, known for his work with legends like Destruction, Accept, Stratovarius, Grave Digger, and Kreator.
